Chapter 10

The next morning as she was swiping her keycard, Emily thought about how much life could change in just one week. It was just a week ago that she was thinking about taking a vacation and making tentative plans for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Last year had been horrible because it was the first year without Ben.

Because this year already felt like it wasn’t going to be much better, she had been exploring options for a cruise for one of the holidays, and maybe a trip out west for the other. The kids weren’t going to be around so she figured that it would be better to do something rather than sit around with nothing but her thoughts for company.

Now this Friday, she was soon to be unemployed and her grand-boss had been murdered. She shuddered as she did every time she thought of his dead body in his office just a few feet away from her.

“Distinctly gross, on a number of levels,” she said aloud.

“What did you say?” a voice behind her startled her, and she whipped around. It was Detective James.

“You scared the crap out of me! I’m usually pretty much alone in here for at least another half hour!” she yelped.

“Well, it seems to me that being alone would be more frightening,” he replied.

“In a bank operations building? With keycards needed for almost everything, including some of the areas where the bathrooms are? Nah. Besides, there’s security all over the place. Somebody may have wanted to knock off the big boss but I’m not exactly high enough up on the food chain to be on anybody’s radar. I think I’m good.”

He leaned in and said quietly, “Yeah, well don’t tell anyone, but I’ve seen two security guys here who were encouraged to retire last year from the force because they weren’t cutting it anymore.”

“Detective,” she laughed. “There’s a huge difference between being able to hack it on the streets and what they have to do here. They just have to make sure no one gets in without a key card or out with a ream of paper.”

“OK, point taken, and it’s Eric.” he said. “Anyway, I wanted to follow up with you about that parking receipt you found.” And I wanted to see that smile again, too.

“In that case, thanks for coming in before anyone else gets here, Eric. I didn’t say anything to anybody, with the exception of Renee, because if it was nothing, I’d look like an idiot. If it was something, then word could get back to the – what’s the inside term? Perp? Skel? Unsub? – that I was causing trouble.”

He cocked his head at her. “Perp? Skel? Unsub? You watch a lot of cop shows, don’t you?”

Emily felt herself blush for the second time in two days. “No, not a lot! OK, maybe a few. NYPD Blue, Law & Order and now Criminal Minds. You got me.”

“Criminal Minds; that explains that,” he pointed to the Quantico sign. “Whatever you want to call the skel,” he air quoted the word, “.
